Omaha Poker

The rules for Omaha are very similar to the Texas Hold'em poker rules, with 1 thing that makes the difference. Instead of two hole cards, each player gets four hole cards. In Omaha, players must make the best possible combination of two of their hole cards and three of the community cards.

Pot Limit

In Pot Limit Omaha (The most popular Omaha variation), a player cannot bet/raise more than the size of the pot. For example, on a pot of $100, $100 can be bet.

Positions

You should know the following positions before playing the game.

  • Big Blind - The player to the left of the Small Blind. The Big Blind is equal to the minimum bet at that time.
  • Small Blind - The player seated directly to the left of the Dealer must bet the small blind.
  • Dealer - Each hand has one designated Dealer. The Dealer position determines the position of the Small and Big Blind. The Dealer button is passed clockwise after each hand

Actions

  • Check
Check to pass your turn without betting. Remember that checking can be considered a sign of weakness.
  • Bet
If you have a good hand, you may want to bet to win a bigger pot.
  • Raise
Show your opponent that you mean business.
  • Call
Call to test the opponent's hand. Not all bets guarantee a strong hand.
  • All-in
Exert maximum pressure on your opponents.
  • Fold
Fold to discard your cards and lose what you put into the pot.

Start of the Game (Pre-Flop and the Flop)

Once a player is dealt hole cards, they can play the hand by calling or raising the big blind. The first action begins to the left of the big blind. Once that player has chosen to call, raise or fold, the action continues clockwise around the table. Betting continues until all remaining players have contributed an equal amount to the pot.

After the first round of betting, the flop is dealt face-up on the board. The flop consists of the first three community cards.

Another round of betting follows.

During the Game (the Turn and the River)

After the betting round on the flop is over, the Turn is added face-up to the board. The Turn is the fourth community card. Play resumes with the first active player to the left of the button. In fixed-limit Omaha, bets and raises on the Turn are made in big-bet sizes.

Once the betting round on the turn is over, the River card comes face-up on the table. The River is the fifth and final community card in Omaha Poker.

A final round of betting follows with the remaining players, starting with the first active player to the left of the button.

End of the Game (The Showdown)

When the last round of betting is over, the remaining players must show their cards. If there is more than one remaining player, the last player to bet or raise must show their cards first. If no bets are placed during the final betting round, the first active player to the left of the button must show their cards first.

When all hands are shown, the player with the best poker hand of five cards is the winner. In case of equal values, the pot is divided equally between the players who have that hand.
